Why DHA during Pregnancy & while Nursing?

What is DHA? DHA, docosahexaenoic acid, is an omega-3 fatty acid which is food for our brain.

What are benefits? Optimal infant brain and eye development and function depends on it. It helps with eye-hand coordination, motor skills and attention spam.

Nutrition is important to our health before we become pregnant, during pregnancy and even after when we nurse our little ones. We all need DHA because it is one of the good fats that we can give our bodies. DHA is like the oil we give to our car to run, it helps our brain to run but it also gives us nutrients to power. Majority of of DHA omega -3 in the body is found in the retina of the eye, brain and in the heart. An unborn baby can not produce it's own DHA so he get's it through the placenta, and the nursing baby get's it through the breastmilk.

A pregnant or nursing woman do get 20-25% of our daily need of DHA through food but it is not enough. This is why increasing DHA in your diet gives your baby help to develop their brain and eyes. This also helps mothers with their mood and supporting her brain and spinal nerves.

My own Experience: Nordic Natural Prenatal DHA is the one I used during both my pregnancies. It has the least toxicity that I have found.

I am nursing my 2nd baby now and I noticed forgetfulness, fogginess when I ran out of DHA and was not taking it for 2 weeks. I ended up getting DHA Extra, also by Nordic and after a couple of days I felt like I was back to normal.

Doctors are now reccomending this important nutrient besides prenatal multivitamins which contains folic acid and calcium to be added in to your diet.

For vegans: There is flax seed oil that can help but ut is best to consume DHA directly.

(I am not a sales person for Nordic, just like this brand)
